Student loans above $20,000.is an understatement. Your question
yes, I could afford to take a job paying less if not for the $500.mo. student loan expense. Educational requires continue to challenge my ability to compete, in the 50 age group, competing with younger educated generation, my MPA needs an upgrade to Doctorial degree.$$$$

May I offer a viable alternative to total loan-forgiveness. Given the state of the economy and jobs are hard to come by, perhaps a graduated system of loan repayment should be emphasized more that it is now. Similar to the current tax-bracket system, repayments of school-loans would be based on income. And to ensure fairness, there would be no increase in interest like there is with credit-cards if you are unable to pay.

There are some programs similar to this out there, I believe. But if memory serves, they expire after a certain time and you would be forced to start repaying even if you are still unemployed. With this type of plan, as long as you don't have a truly reasonable income (border-line poverty or less than $15k/year), then you don't pay. Just a thought. I don't want any college grads to be placed in financial hardship. But the taxpayers should cover the brunt of the overall loans as we will have to with mortgages. It just wouldn't work.

No way. Your student loans are your investment into YOUR future, the same as us older folks (I'm in my 30's) were to ours. I made 6 figures in my 20's because I got a degree. I probably wouldn't have done so if I had not gone to college.

Oh, BTW - because I got my expensive degree, and a hard-working/paying job, I have higher taxes. Where will the "forgiveness" come from? If your college wants to give you free-rides, that's cool. But I promise you - they will turn to said "city councils" (i.e. - government) and say - "PAY UP!!" And they will- and with what money, you might ask? TAXES!!

Why should I pay higher taxes so you can all have free-rides? I understand that school is expensive, but as they said back when I was in high school - "if you think degree is expensive, imagine how expensive life would be without one...".

I would be willing to take a lesser paying job if my student loans were forgiven. In doing so, my future would be brighter and I would be able to spend more. This is one great idea to help the US.

If I did not have a student loan to repay, I would be willing to accept a lower paying job. My career would have much more breathing room and room for growth.

I will vote for college debt forgivness. I know my student loans are well over 20,000. I am not a young student, and I will be paying back student loans untill I am 80 years old. If I can even get a job with the economy in the shape it is in.
